NIBONG TEBAL – The Penang government has vowed to prevent the demolition of houses and temples on a plot of land in Ladang Sg Kecil near here, assuring the 23 families residing there that they will not be rendered homeless.
Deputy Chief Minister II P. Ramasamy told the state assembly that the Penang administration since 2008 has protected houses of worship from being destroyed, and this will not change.
In the Ladang Sg Kecil case, the landowner, who bought the plot two years ago, has obtained a court order to demolish the 23 houses and three temples there tomorrow.
Ramasamy said the Penang Hindu Endowments Board (PHEB), of which he is chairman, previously expressed interest in buying the land, but the landowner appears set on seeing the court order through.
However, he told The Vibes, the state will ensure the homes and temples are not torn down.
“The landowner cannot simply demolish the structures there as he needs to obtain approval from the Seberang Prai City Council (MBSP) first.”
He said PHEB held talks with the landowner on a possible purchase in March, before the movement control order took effect.
The landowner, who bought the plot for RM2 million from an oil palm plantation company, decided against a sale.
“Recently, the landowner obtained a court order to vacate the land, and he served an eviction notice to the 23 families living there,” said Ramasamy, adding that the landowner has refused to meet PHEB representatives, with his lawyers attending only “one or two” meetings.
“I don’t understand the reason why he refuses to meet us. He could have sold us the land, as we are willing to buy it at market price.
“Anyway, the state can still acquire the land, and MBSP officials will be stationed there to prevent the demolition. (The landowner) can’t even cut down the trees there.”
The affected families have obtained a stay order, which expires tomorrow, against the demolition. – The Vibes, October 18, 2020
