MIRI – A total of 125 foreign workers have contracted Covid-19 at a sawmill in Kuala Baram, 25km north from here.

Other than them, six locals have also been infected with the virus in the district.

The Sarawak Disaster Management Committee in a statement today said this new outbreak has been classified as the Industri 121 Kuala Baram cluster. It is one of three new clusters in the state today.

“The sawmill has been placed under lockdown. The cluster has 131 cases, so far.

“All infected individuals have been sent to Miri Hospital for treatment.”

Active screening is underway, with 210 other workers under lockdown, it added.

The other two new clusters are the Sg Sebetan cluster in Saratok, which saw 45 longhouse folk infected, and the Sega cluster in Bau, which saw 17 individuals infected at a housing area.

Sarawak recorded 424 fresh infections today, with Miri topping the list due to the sawmill outbreak.

Kuching recorded 92 cases, Telang Usan (40), Meradong (34), Sibu (32) and Sri Aman (19), while other districts had fewer than 10 each.

No fatalities were reported today. – The Vibes, July 5, 2021
