MIRI – Several areas in Sarawak plunged into sudden darkness due to a blackout at around 9.30pm tonight.

The power outages hit several locations in Kuching, and as far as Sebauh in Bintulu.

A check with Sarawak Energy Bhd (SEB) revealed that the blackout was caused by double circuit tripping along the main power grid near Murum Dam in the Belaga district.

According to SEB the outage occurred after a trip along the 275kV Murum transmission lines.

Meanwhile SEB in a tweet reported damaged underground cables in Lundu may have been caused by excavation works by third party contractors. This had affected supply to Teluk Melano, Teluk Serabang and surrounding areas with repair works estimated to be completed by midnight.

In a statement, SEB said the double tripping is being identified and full restoration started progressively since 10.30pm.

“Double circuit tripping of Murum transmission lines caused major supply interruption. Supply is being safely restored progressively,” said SEB.

Meanwhile, claims on social media that the whole of Sarawak is in darkness is inaccurate since only parts of the state are affected.

As of 10.30pm, power supply has been restored in Kuching and Miri. – The Vibes, July 10, 2021
