MIRI – A night of darkness in most parts of Sarawak yesterday has sparked concern among the people that there will be a repeat of power outages in the state.

Residents voicing this on social media said they were perplexed that the power outage occurred in so many localities and districts all at once.

One of them, Chan Au Poh said the Bintulu district suffered its third blackout since Friday night.

“Last night’s blackout is the third in Bintulu since Friday.

“What is happening?,” he asked.

Wan Taha Mahmood said parts of Miri district were hit too.

He said feedback from friends was that the power outage also affected the southern part of Sarawak, in the Lundu district.

Angela Sawing said this may call for the upgrading of the power grid connections.

Several areas in Sarawak plunged into sudden darkness due to a blackout at around 9.30pm last night.

The power outages hit several locations in Kuching, and as far as Sebauh in Bintulu.

A check with Sarawak Energy Bhd (SEB) revealed that the blackout was caused by double circuit tripping along the main power grid near Murum Dam in the Belaga district.

According to SEB the outage occurred after a trip along the 275kV Murum transmission lines.

SEB technical teams who have since identified the source of the problem, have taken measures to restore power supply. – The Vibes, July 11, 2021
