KUALA LUMPUR – After receiving a barrage of questions following his announcement yesterday that the six emergency ordinances have been retroactively revoked on July 21, Datuk Seri Takiyuddin Hassan said the impact of the move is under the purview of Health Minister Datuk Seri Dr Adham Baba (Tenggara-BN).

Several opposition lawmakers today continued to pressure the law minister, asking him whether those who have been issued compounds under the ordinances after July 21 will still be charged, prosecuted or arrested.

“Members of the House can raise the issue of (the public impact of the revocation of) the ordinances during the debate with the health minister. He is the owner of these ordinances. Not me. You can raise the issue with him,” said Takiyuddin (Kota Baru-PAS).

Pakatan Harapan MPs, however, pressed on with their grilling.

Referring to a ruling by Dewan Rakyat Speaker Datuk Azhar Azizan Harun yesterday, Takiyuddin said he will respond to any queries related to the emergency ordinances next Monday.

Opposition chief Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim (Port Dickson-PH) accused Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin’s administration of not receiving Yang di-Pertuan Agong Al-Sultan Abdullah Ri’ayatuddin Al-Mustafa Billah Shah’s assent to retroactively revoke the ordinances.

“This is a very specific question. If the king has not granted his assent, say that he has not. If he has, say that he has. Generally, lawmakers from both sides of the divide know that His Majesty has not granted his assent. If he has, Kota Baru would have shown the letter yesterday.

“So, the prime minister and law minister must explain that the process of retroactive revocation is ongoing. Don’t dodge the issue by saying ‘wait until Monday’. We can discuss this today because yesterday, you made an announcement involving the (emergency) proclamation and the ordinances.

The minister said it has been revoked. If it hasn’t (been gazetted or received the Agong’s assent), just apologise and say you made a mistake. The cabinet is in the process of presenting this to the Agong, and please give space for the Agong to consider and make his proclamation.

“Wouldn’t that be easier instead of deflecting here and there? Otherwise, there will be absolutely no (public) confidence in the leadership of this government. People won’t believe whatever they say.”

The opposition also issued calls for Deputy Speaker Datuk Seri Azalina Othman Said (Pengerang-BN) to instruct Takiyuddin to, at the very least, reply on whether the king has granted his assent.

However, Azalina maintained Azhar’s ruling yesterday, saying if opposition MPs are unhappy about it, they can present their demands when the latter presides over the House at 11am.

“I will not overturn the speaker’s ruling. You will have another platform to make your case at 11am. Wait for him,” she said amid loud calls to force an answer from Takiyuddin. – The Vibes, July 27, 2021
