KUALA LUMPUR – Opposition leader Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim is being investigated under seven different provisions of the law for his involvement in the MP march on Parliament on Monday, including for allegedly inciting the public.
His wife, PKR adviser Datuk Seri Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail, is investigated under five provisions.
The couple’s lawyer, Datuk Sankara Nair, told The Vibes that his clients had to endure a two-hour long questioning session by police today.
Sankara said both are being investigated under Section 269 of the Penal Code for negligent act such as to spread infection and Section 9(5) of the Peaceful Assembly Act 2012 for failing to notify police on the gathering.
Anwar and Dr Wan Azizah are also probed under the Prevention and Control of Infectious Disease Act 1988, and Regulations 9 and 10 of the Prevention and Control of Infectious Disease Regulations 2021.
Anwar also faces action under two additional provisions – Section 505 of the Penal Code for issuing a statement conducing to public mischief, and Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998 for improper use of network.
Earlier, The Vibes had reported that the PKR president was being quizzed by police at party headquarters in Merchant Square, Petaling Jaya, since 11am.
This is part of a series of questioning being conducted by police on opposition lawmakers who were involved in a protest march from Dataran Merdeka to Parliament on August 2, following the closure of both Houses.
So far, more than a dozen MPs have been questioned, after Kuala Lumpur police chief Datuk Azmi Abu Kassim said an investigation will be carried out on all parliamentarians involved in the gathering on Monday.
It is uncertain whether the other MPs face similar action as Anwar and Dr Wan Azizah.
Sankara said the two PKR leaders were cooperative during the questioning session.
At the moment, he said there has been no confirmation whether the duo will be called in again, adding that the probe is solely focused on the Parliament protest.
“The questions were all related to the sections of the law that had to do with the day they went to Parliament and the police blockade.”
Sg Buloh MP Sivarasa Rasiah was also summoned to provide a statement on the same gathering at 10am at the district police headquarters in his constituency today.
He said he will be accompanied by Petaling Jaya MP Maria Chin Abdullah and Seputeh MP Teresa Kok.
Yesterday, parliamentarians Datuk Mahfuz Omar, Datuk Seri Salahuddin Ayub and Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail gave their statements at the Dang Wangi police station.
However, there were also lawmakers who lodged reports against those who instructed police to cordon off roads leading to Parliament. Among them are Ipoh Barat MP M. Kula Segaran, Batu MP P. Prabakaran and Johor Baru MP Akmal Nasrullah Mohd Nasir. – The Vibes, August 7, 2021
