KOTA TINGGI – The Johor Forestry Department (JPNJ) is targeting to plant four million trees in the next five years to make Malaysia’s green agenda, through the 100 Million Tree-Planting Campaign by 2025, a success.
JPNJ director Datuk Salim Aman said a total of 230,000 trees from 43 species have been planted in the state since the launch of the campaign on January 5.
“In Johor, we have set a target to plant four million trees within five years, with an average of 800,000 trees a year.
“At the national level, 13 million trees from 724 species have been planted by 55 agencies and 3,128 individuals,” he told Bernama at the Panti Forest Reserve here today.
He said the Malaysia Greening campaign is one of the government’s efforts and commitments at the international level to maintain at least 50% of the country’s land areas covered by trees and forest.
Salim said the public can also participate in the campaign by registering through the Malaysia Greening application, where they will also have the opportunity to receive rewards.
Meanwhile, he said the phenomenon of mass flowering that is happening in most of the dipterocarp forests in the country can also help JPNJ produce more saplings.
“This phenomenon is unique and rare because it usually occurs intermittently and may see intervals of many years.
“So, with this phenomenon, it really helps us and other state Forestry Departments to collect and sow seeds to produce more seedlings for planting, and support this campaign,” he said, adding that there are seven nurseries in the state that can accommodate as many as 272,100 trees.
He said JPNJ is also constantly identifying flowering trees in the permanent forest reserve for seed-collection activities via the e-Forgis system. – Bernama, August 18, 2021
