KUALA LUMPUR – The Umno Supreme Council will tonight decide its stand on several matters in relation to the country’s political development, said Datuk Seri Najib Razak.

The former prime minister, however, did not say exactly what these matters are.

“We have not yet decided on anything. We were just gathering opinion and feedback from Barisan Nasional MPs on our stand and direction,” he told reporters after the coalition’s meeting of its lawmakers at Putra World Trade Centre here today.

“However, the final decision will be made at tonight’s Supreme Council meeting.”

This comes after the Yang di-Pertuan Agong yesterday rejected Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin’s proposal for an emergency to be declared, saying it is not necessary at this time.

Critics have said Muhyiddin’s bid was nothing more than a desperate attempt to hold on to power by preventing Budget 2021 from being tabled, as a defeat would translate into a lack of support in the Dewan Rakyat.

Najib said MPs have agreed that decisions will be made en bloc at the Supreme Council meeting.

“As Umno members, we are subjected to the party’s decisions, and we will hold on to this principle. Whatever happens, Umno cannot be divided. We must act as one bloc.”

Meanwhile, Gua Musang MP Tengku Razaleigh Hamzah acknowledged that Umno MPs brought up the party’s position with regard to cooperation with Muhyiddin at this afternoon’s meet.

“All this will be discussed at tonight’s Supreme Council meeting.”

Supreme Council member Datuk Zahidi Zainul Abidin corroborated Tengku Razaleigh’s statement, saying several lawmakers have suggested withdrawing support for Muhyiddin’s Perikatan Nasional government.

Sembrong MP Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Hussein was coy when asked about what transpired at the BN meeting, saying only that decisions must be made in the people’s interest.

“We discussed how to move forward. We must find a way. Whatever is decided must be in the best interest of the country and people.” – The Vibes, October 26, 2020
