MIRI – The Delta variant of Covid-19 has reached the remote Song district in the heart of central Sarawak, about 150km from Sibu town.
Song is one of three districts in Kapit division in central Sarawak, the others being Belaga and Kapit districts.
Nyurak Keti, a Kapit resident and chief government officer there, told reporters in Kapit town that the variant has been detected in Song.
“Delta has been detected from Sibu to Song. This is of grave concern to all of us,” he said today.
“We have issued a directive prohibiting civil servants in the districts from travelling for the next two weeks unless for emergency purposes,” he said.
Keti did not give details about the number of cases or whether the cases detected in Song are in rural longhouses or in the town. He warned the public to exercise extra precautions.
Sarawak currently has the greatest number of Delta infections in the country, with about 700 cases reported in Kuching, Samarahan, Serian, Sibu, Bintulu, and Miri.
There are also another several dozen cases of Beta, Theta, Alpha, and Eta variants found in this state so far.
Bintulu MP Datuk Seri Tiong King Sing yesterday said there are 14 cases of a possibly new and more dangerous variant found in a housing estate in Bintulu town. – The Vibes, September 1, 2021
