PUTRAJAYA – A proposal to place the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission under Parliament is being studied, said Special Committee on Corruption (JKMR) chairman Tan Sri Rais Yatim.

He said the matter is being given special consideration by JKMR because if accepted, it can increase public trust and confidence in the anti-graft agency.

“I am motivated to help so that MACC is placed under Parliament. We are giving special consideration to realise this objective.

“This is because if MACC is too exposed to the power and influence of the executive or parties not related to integrity, over time, it will become influenced by politics and outside elements,” he told reporters after attending a briefing with MACC chief Datuk Seri Azam Baki at the agency’s headquarters here today.

Attending the briefing, conducted virtually, were JKMR members and the MACC top management.

JKMR was established in accordance with Section 14 of the MACC Act 2009. It is responsible for advising the prime minister on matters related to corruption, and examining MACC’s annual report.

Rais, who is also Dewan Negara president, said education on corruption should begin in schools to ensure Malaysia’s younger generation is aware of the dangers of such practices.

“Corruption is dangerous and can destroy our way of life. The culture of hating corruption should start in schools and universities… perhaps, education on graft can be included in the syllabus or extracurricular activities.” – Bernama, September 3, 2021
