KUALA LUMPUR – There are currently 1,359 inmates on death row for murder, drug trafficking, robbery, kidnapping, and possession of firearms as well as explosives, according to the Home Ministry.

However, in the ministry’s written parliamentary reply, it was explained that executions cannot take place because the inmates are in the midst of the appeal process.

There are 509 inmates undergoing the judicial appeal process while 850 are appealing to the State Pardons Board.

Gobind Singh Deo (Puchong-PH) questioned the number of inmates on death row and if the government is committed to abolishing the death penalty.

The ministry said that the issue will be brought to the cabinet for deliberation and changes can only be made once Putrajaya gives the green light.

Following the Substitute Punishment for Mandatory Death Penalty Final Report, the document contains suggestions towards 11 offences that carry the mandatory death penalty and 21 offences carrying the death penalty based on the court’s discretion.

“To ensure improvement of the criminal justice system, the relevant special committee has guaranteed substitute punishments that are fair and adequate with regards to the offence committed,” the ministry said, adding that the report would be presented to the cabinet soon.

The death penalty issue has been the constant highlight in previous Dewan Rakyat meetings.

Datuk Seri Mohamed Nazri Abdul Aziz (BN-Padang Rengas) pointed out that those involved in drug-related offences are usually among the underprivileged and the poor.

“These drug moles will not gain much profit from jobs, unlike drug lords who end up making most of the money and getting away with the crime. Hence, involvements with drugs should not result in receiving the death penalty.” – The Vibes, November 15, 2021
