KUALA LUMPUR – Teachers at Kolej Vokasional ERT in Setapak are not involved in conducting “period spot checks”, but it has been a “tradition” for senior students to perform such inspections on other students, Education Minister Datuk Mohd Radzi Md Jidin told the Dewan Rakyat today.
After being questioned by Teo Nie Ching (Kulai-PH), Radzi said he made the decision to not reveal details to the public on what he found out after visiting the school on October 26.
“These physical examinations were done by senior students on other students. Based on their explanation, it has been a tradition among seniors for some time.
“We met with those involved, and advised them not to do it again,” he said.
As an extra measure, he said a circular was issued prohibiting period spot checks in all schools under the purview of the Education Ministry.
He added that officers from the ministry were conducting investigations to determine if teachers or wardens at the institution were involved in this practice.
On October 26, Radzi visited the school in Setapak to obtain information concerning allegations of period spot checks among female students.
Subsequently, on November 2, the ministry issued a circular prohibiting any form of physical examinations against female students. – The Vibes, November 15, 2021
