MIRI – Sarawak DAP chairman Chong Chieng Jen has challenged Sarawak United Peoples Party president Datuk Dr Sim Kui Hian to explain to the public on how the latter had utilised RM330 million in taxpayers’ money for the development of the Batu Kawah state constituency in Kuching.

In a press conference, today, Chong said his call was based on Dr Sim’s report case announcement where the incumbent had stated that RM330 million had been acquired since the 2016 state election to improve the constituency.

Dr Sim had won the hot seat in 2016 after defeating then-Sarawak DAP candidate Christina Chiew by over 2,000 votes.

As such Chong and DAP called on Dr Sim to provide a detailed breakdown of how the monies were spent.

“Please give exact details of how much money was used and for what projects.”

“Why is it that the traffic problems in Batu Kawah have gotten from bad to worse without any major improvements to the road system?

“The flash flood problems have worsened too but there have been no major improvements to the drainage system over the past five years either.

“Where did the money go? Dr Sim was the minister for local government.

“The issue of low-cost and affordable housing – we have not seen any such housing projects at all.

“There are many families with low income who are finding it hard to buy houses as many housing projects by private developers are too expensive.

“This is happening not just in Batu Kawah, but throughout Sarawak.

“Dr Sim was also minister for housing, so where did the money go?

“Dr Sim must answer all of these questions, not just to the people in Batu Kawah, but to the whole of Sarawak,” he said.

Also present at the live press conference from the state DAP office in Kuching, was DAP Batu Kawah candidate Dr Kelvin Yii.

Batu Kawah is seeing four-cornered fights.

Dr Yii and Dr Sim are facing Chai Kueh Kun of Parti Bumi Kenyalang and Fong Pau Teck of Parti Aspirasi for the seat.
