GEORGE TOWN – Penang’s tourism industry is gradually getting back on track since the lifting of the interstate travel ban in late October.
State Tourism and Creative Economy Committee chairman Yeoh Soon Hin said he is delighted to see tourism industry players coming together in times of need.
“I see this evening’s occasion as a timely opportunity for us to appreciate our mutual efforts and, more importantly, (it’s) a platform for us to ponder upon the tremendous efforts and milestones we have collectively achieved this year.
“To say that our economy has been challenged in the last two years would be an understatement. But in fact, these were challenging and tough years for all industries – which has left a detrimental impact that many industry players are still recovering from,” Yeoh said during an appreciation night in honour of his contribution to the tourism industry organised by the Association of Tourism Attractions Penang (ATAP) at The Top in Komtar last night.
Also present was ATAP chairman Ch’ng Huck Theng, several government agencies, and tourism-related organisations.
Yeoh said Penang entered Phase Four of the National Recovery Plan in late October, and the state government is elated to learn that many hotels and tourist attractions in Penang had achieved a rather commendable turnout and occupancy rate since then – especially during the current holiday season.
However, Yeoh reminded that the fight against Covid-19 is yet to be over – and the state government, industry players, and citizens should continue to practise good personal hygiene and observe standard operating procedures to break the pandemic chain.
He expressed his gratitude to ATAP and its members for taking the initiative to work with the state government to position Penang as a responsible tourism destination.
Meanwhile, Ch’ng praised Yeoh for his tireless work and effort in reviving the state tourism industry for the betterment of Penangites.
“Yeoh is there whenever industry players need help, and he plays his part to resolve obstacles faced by the industry players,” he said. – The Vibes, December 18, 2021
