KUALA LUMPUR – In a crushing win, Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) swept 76 seats in the 12th state election, retaining its power as the ruling coalition for another five years.
Parti Sarawak Bersatu (PSB) garnered four seats, while DAP clinched two.
PKR – which did not win any seats in the election – lost its deposits in 22 constituencies, whereas DAP lost its deposits in 10 of them.
The 22 constituencies comprise Asajaya, Beting Maro, Ba’kelalan, Balingian, Sadong Jaya, Serembu, Tellian, Bukit Saban, Tebedu, Lingga, Kakus, Ngemah, Simunjan, Batu Danau, Lambir, Bekenu, Satok, Opar, Murum, Marudi, Tupong, and Katibas.
The party, however, retained its deposits in Tarat and Saribas.
DAP lost its deposits in Pelagus, Bukit Goram, Stakan, Simanggang, Bukit Semuja, Kemena, Baleh, Machan, Meradong, and Bawang Assan.
Its deposits were retained in the Mambong, Batu Kitang, Batu Kawah, Pujut, Piasau, Repok, Pelawan, and Bukit Assek constituencies.
Earlier at 9.20pm, GPS – comprising Parti Pesaka Bumiputera Bersatu (PBB), Sarawak United Peoples’ Party (SUPP), Parti Rakyat Sarawak (PRS), and Progressive Democratic Party (PDP) – garnered 55 of 82 seats to win the election with a two-third majority.
At 8.20pm, the coalition won a simple majority to form the state government when it garnered 42 seats.
Chief Minister Tan Sri Abang Johari Openg nabbed the Gedong seat for the first time after moving from Satok – which he has held for the past nine terms – with 4,310 votes.
He beat Parti Sarawak Bersatu’s (PSB) Mohamad Sofian Fariz Sharbini who garnered 703 votes; Amanah’s Cikgu Kamal (94 votes); and Parti Bumi Kenyalang’s Tomson Ango (157 votes).
11.15pm: GPS officially nabs Tg Batu from DAP. Johnny Pang Leong Ming of GPS won the seat with a razor thin majority of 23. DAP’s Chiew Chan Yew came in close with 4,069 votes, followed by PBK’s Yek Hock Siang (2,204), PSB’s Tang Eng Hui (1,071), PARS’ Chieng Lea Phing (93), and independent candidate Wong Hau Ming (38). 10.50pm: Dennis Ngau of GPS officially retains Telang Usan via a 2,422-vote majority. Ngau defeated Jau Joh of PSB, Phillip Jau Ding (PKR), and Gia Bala (PBK). In 2016, he won the seat with a slim majority of 167 votes.
10.22pm: Batu Lintang incumbent See Chee How of PSB has kept his seat with a razor thin majority of 93. He defeated four other candidates – Sih Hua Tong of GPS, Cherishe Ng Phuay Hui of PKR, Voon Lee Shan of PBK, and Leong Shaow Tung of Parti Aspirasi Rakyat Sarawak. This win delivered PSB its fourth seat in the state polls so far.
10.15pm: PSB president Datuk Seri Wong Soon Koh officially retains Bawang Assan with a slim majority of 913 votes. This means Wong, who has held the seat since 1991, will be entering a seventh term. DAP’s Amy Lau Bik Yieng, Michelle Ling Shyan Mih (PBK), and Ricky Enteri (independent) lost their deposits.
10.13pm: GPS officially bags Kedup, Murum, Marudi, and Samariang.
Martin Ben defended Kedup via a 3,566-vote majority, beating PSB’s Dominic Dado Sagin, PBK’s Dr Stephen Morgan Sungan, and DAP’s Learry Jabul.
Meanwhile in Murum, Kennedy Chukpai Ugon defeated his opponents with a 2,919-vote majority.
In Marudi, Datuk Dr Penguang Manggil defended his seat with a big majority of 5,976.
Sharifah Hasidah Sayeed Aman Ghazali retained Samariang, beating Abang Halil (Amanah) and Othman Abdillah (Parti Sedar Rakyat Sarawak). Sharifah garnered a huge majority of 10,283 votes.
9.50pm: GPS’ Billy Sujang officially won Opar with a majority of 1,689, defeating incumbent Ranum Mina from PSB. In 2016, Ranum won the seat by garnering a huge majority of 2,082 votes. Meanwhile, PKR’s Meneng Biris, Parti Bansa Dayak Sarawak Baru’s Cikgu Saini Kakong, and Parti Sedar Rakyat Sarawak’s Bayang Teron lost their deposits.
9.48pm: Yap Yau Sin of GPS has nabbed Kota Sentosa with a 1,683-vote majority. Yap officially defeated Michael Kong Feng Nian from DAP who garnered 4,123 votes, PSB’s Lau Pang Heng (2,328), PBK’s Lue Cheng Hing (1,015), and PARS’ Tan Kok Chiang (215). Lue and Tan both lost their deposits.
9.45pm: In the highly-contested Dudong seat, Datuk Tiong Thai King successfully retains the constituency with 9,390 votes. Tiong officially defeated seven other challengers with a huge majority of 5,806. PSB’s Wong Hie Ping came in second with 3,584 votes, followed by DAP’s Paul Ling Fong (2,724). Meanwhile, five other contenders – PBK’s Jane Lau Sing Yee, Cardock (independent), Julius Enchana Jaspher Ancho (Parti Bangsa Dayak Sarawak Baru), Engga Unchat (independent), and Josephine Lau (PARS) – lost their deposits.
9.39pm: PKR has lost its deposits in 17 seats comprising Asajaya, Beting Maro, Ba'kelalan, Balingian, Sadong Jaya, Serembu, Tellian, Bukit Saban, Tebedu, Lingga, Kakus, Ngemah, Simunjan, Batu Danau, Lambir, Bekenu, and Satok. However, it has retained its deposits in two seats – Tarat and Saribas.

9.35pm: GPS’ Ding Kuong Hiing officially retains Meradong with a big majority of 3,362 votes. Ding beats Hii Ru Yee, who only garnered 3,465 votes. Meanwhile, DAP’s Yong Siew Wei and Moh Hiong King (PBK) lost their respective deposits.
9.30pm: DAP won its second seat in Pending, with its incumbent Violet Yong Wui Wui garnering 540 majority votes. Yong defeated Milton Foo Tiang Wee (GPS), Tan Kay Hok (PSB), Teo Kuang Kim (PBK), and Chan Chee Hiong (PARS). In 2016, Yong had secured a bigger mandate of 5,012 votes.
9.25pm: The seat with the biggest majority is Pantai Damai with 8,381 votes, while Pelawan had the smallest majority with 100 votes. So far, 116 candidates have lost their deposits.
9.23pm: Datuk Talib Zulpilip officially retains Jepak with 6,277 votes and a comfortable 4,243-vote majority, beating PSB's Dr Raba'ah Tudin. The other two opponents – from Parti Bumi Kenyalang and an independent candidate – lost their deposits. Talib previously won the Jepak seat in 2016 with a 4,201-vote majority.
9.22pm: DAP officially retains Padungan with a comfortable majority of 1,198 votes. Chong Chieng Jen garnered 4,686 votes, defeating his opponents Wee Hong Seng (GPS), Raymond Thong Ee Yu (PBK), and Lina Soo (Parti Aspirasi Rakyat Sarawak). In 2016, Padungan incumbent Wong King Wei had secured a big majority of 4,270 votes.
9.20pm: DAP's Irene Chang officially lost the Bukit Assek seat to GPS' Chieng Jin Ek. Chieng won with 4,684 votes and a small majority of 874. Meanwhile, Irene obtained only 3,810 votes. In 2016, Irene won the seat with a large 4,497-vote majority.
9.19pm: DAP's David Wong Kee Woan officially lost his Pelawan set to GPS' Michael Tiang. Michael, who obtained 4,413 votes, secured the seat with a very slim majority of 100. David was a two-time incumbent for the Pelawan seat. In 2016, via a DAP ticket, David won the Pelawan seat with a 4,314-vote majority.
9.15pm: GPS' Datuk Seri Huang Tiong Sii officially won the Repok seat with 10,038 votes and a very comfortable 7,308-vote majority, beating DAP's Wong Pak Ming who only garnered 2,730 votes. Both Parti Aspirasi Rakyat Sarawak and Parti Bumi Kenyalang candidates lost their deposits. Huang previously won the Repok seat in 2016 with a slim 943-vote majority.
9.14pm: GPS officially retains Machan, Jemoreng, Piasau, and Batu Danau.
Allan Siden Gramong defends Machan with a vast majority of 2,089, beating Madang Dimbab. PKR’s Joseph Nyambong only managed to garner 1,267 votes, Mary Rita Mathias (203), and Ngelayang Unau (52). Mary and Ngelayang both lost their deposits.
Meanwhile in Jemoreng, Datuk Dr Juanda Jaya defended the seat with a huge majority of 5,012 votes. Juanda defeats Osman Rafaie (independent) and Ustazah Zainab (Amanah).
Datuk Sebastian Ting Chiew Yew also retains the Piasau constituency, defeating Peter Hee (DAP) with a majority of 4,988 votes. Ting’s challengers – Teo Jia Jun, Ching Siew Yen, and Hanim Jaraee – lost their deposits.
In Batu Danau, Paulus Palu Gumbang managed to win the seat with a slim majority of 706 votes. Previously, he won the seat in 2016 with a majority of 2,939 votes.
9.09pm: PKR has lost its deposits in 16 seats comprising Asajaya, Beting Maro, Ba'kelalan, Balingian, Sadong Jaya, Serembu, Tellian, Bukit Saban, Tebedu, Lingga, Kakus, Ngemah, Simunjan, Batu Danau, Lambir, and Bekenu. However, it has retained its deposits in two seats – Tarat and Saribas.
DAP has lost its deposits in eight seats comprising Pelagus, Bukit Goram, Stakan, Simanggang, Bukit Semuja, Kemena, Baleh, and Machan. However, it has retained its deposits in an equal number of seats (Mambong, Batu Kitang, Batu Kawah, Pujut, Piasau, Repok, Pelawan, and Bukit Assek).
8.46pm: Awla Idris officially defends Simunjan, defeating three other challengers with a majority vote of 3,351. Reli Ali takes second place with 925 votes, while Hapeni Fadil (518) and Saharuddin Abdullah (137) lost their deposits.
8.41pm: Nicholas Kudi Jantai from GPS officially wins the Baleh seat with 3,541 votes and a 1,909-vote majority. He beats PSB's Koh Kumbong, who garnered 1,632 votes. DAP's Kenneth Usang George and Parti Bumi Kenyalang's Sukarno Layau lost their deposits. Kenneth only obtained 470 votes.
8.39pm: DAP offically fails to retain Pujut, with the seat going to GPS’ Adam Yii Siew Sang. Yii secured a comfortable 1,565-vote majority, defeating Alan Ling (DAP), Bruce Chai Khim Cheong (PSB), Leslie Ting Siong Ngiap (PBK), and Chin Fen Siong (PARS). Ting and Chin both lost their deposits.
8.38pm: GPS' Datuk Seri Dr Stephen Rundi Utom successfully retains Kemena with 6,339 votes. He officially won the seat with a comfortable 3,611-vote majority, beating PSB's Dr Bernard Tahim who only secured 2,728 votes. Meanwhile, other opponents including DAP's Dr John Brian Anthony all lost their deposits. Dr John only garnered 399 votes.
8.32pm: Dr Kelvin Yii officially loses Batu Kawah to incumbent Datuk Dr Sim Kui Hian. Dr Sim won the seat with 7,827 votes and a large 5,393 majority. Dr Yii, who garnered 2,434 votes, did not lose his deposit. Previously, Dr Sim won Batu Kawah in 2016 with a 2,085-vote majority.
8.31pm: GPS officially won Simanggang, Batu Kitang, and Kakus. Datuk Francis Harden Hollis retains Simanggang with a slim majority of 175 votes, beating Wilson Entabang. PKR’s Leon Jimat Donald and Peli Aron of PBK have lost their deposits. In 2016, Francis won the seat with a 1,388-vote majority.
Meanwhile, Lo Khere Chiang retains Batu Kitang, garnering a huge majority of 4,163 votes.
In Kakus, Datuk John Sikie Tayai also retains the seat with a comfortable majority of 1,897.
8.26pm: GPS' John Ilus officially retains the Bukit Semuja with 6,113 votes. He also won the seat with a comfortable 4,705-vote majority, beating Elsiy Tingang from PSB. Meanwhile, DAP's Brolin Nicholsion only obtained 777 votes, losing his deposit. Previously in 2016, John secured the seat with a 3,144-vote majority.
8.24pm: Anyi Jana from GPS wins Ngemah. The GPS candidate, however, only secured the seat with a 261-vote majority, beating PSB's Joseph Jawa. Other opponents, including PKR's Satu Anchom, all lost their deposits. Satu only secured 259 votes.
8.21pm: GPS’ Dr Simon Sinang officially won Tebedu with 5,082 votes, garnering a huge majority of 3,273. Raymond Achen, contesting under the PSB banner, came in second with 1,809 votes. Meanwhile, other challengers – Jonathan Lantik Ok (PBK), Senior William Rade (PKR), and Roland Bangu (independent) – have lost their deposits.
8.15pm: GPS wins Daro, Kabong, and Tg Datu. In Kabong, Mohd Chee Kadir won with a majority of 2,763 votes, beating Wan Mohamad Mahedi Ali from PSB. Meanwhile, Amanah's Hud Andri only obtained 91 votes.
8.07pm: GPS officially retains Bukit Saban as its election director Datuk Douglas Uggah Embas secured 3,988 votes. The caretaker deputy chief minister defended the Iban-majority seat by defeating PSB’s Andria Gelayan and PKR’s Mikhail Mathew. In 2016, Douglas won the seat with a 4,599-vote majority.
8.05pm: Ricky Sitam from GPS retains the Saribas seat after garnering 5,138 votes. He won with a 3,236-vote majority, beating PKR's Cikgu Patek. Meanwhile, opponents from PSB, Parti Buki Kenyalang, and Parti Sedar Rakyat Sarawak all lost their deposits. Ricky previously won the same seat in 2016 with a 4,432-vote majority.
8.01pm: Datuk Idris Buang officially retains Muara Tuang with a huge majority of 6,237 votes. The seat incumbent defeated Ismawi Muhammad (independent), Yakup Khalid (PSB), Hipni Sulaiman (Parti Sedar Rakyat Sarawak), Daud Eali (Amanah), and Sigandam Sulaiman (PBK). In 2016, Idris won the seat with a 8,578-vote majority.
7.59pm: Friday Belik has officially taken the Krian seat away from Ali Biju. Friday won the seat with 3,885 votes and a 932-vote majority. PSB's Musa Dinggat lost after obtaining only 2,953 votes, while independent Ali nabbed 1,777 votes. Ali previously won the Krian seat in 2016 under a PKR ticket with a 1,640-vote majority.
7.55pm: GPS' Christopher Gira Sambang officially retains Tamin with more votes than he had in 2016. This election saw Gira comfortably nabbing the seat with 3,588 votes. PSB's Datuk Joseph Entulu Belaun lost after only obtaining 4,190 votes. In 2016, Gira won the Tamin seat with a 2,085-vote majority.
7.52pm: GPS officially wins Kalaka. Mohamad Duri nabbed the seat with a 2,868-vote majority, beating PSB's John Antau Linggang. Meanwhile, Parti Bumi Kenyalang's Linang Chapum lost his deposit after getting only 457 votes. The seat was previously held by Datuk Abdul Wahab Aziz.
7.48pm: GPS officially nabs Tarat, Sadong Jaya, and Serembu. Datuk Roland Sagah retains Tarat with a comfortable 5,008-vote majority, beating Dadi Juul (PSB). PKR's Christo Michael; Parti Bumi Kenyalang's Edison Jamang; and independent candidate Bai Dungak lost their majority. Roland previously won the seat in 2016 with a 5,421-vote majority.
Meanwhile, Aidel Lariwoo retained the Sadong Jaya seat by a 3,877-vote majority, with all opponents losing their majority, including PKR's Cikgu Piee.
Miro Simuh also retains Serembu, nabbing a 1,650-vote majority. Miro beats PSB's Iana Akam, while his other opponents, including PKR's Michael Saweng who only obtained 217 votes, lost their majority.
7.47pm: Bukit Sari, with 5,636 votes, is the seat with the highest majority, while Ba'kelalan remains the seat with the lowest majority at 680. So far, 38 candidates have lost their deposits.
7.46pm: GPS’ Mohamad Duri has won Kalaka with a 2,868-vote majority.
7.45pm: GPS claims yet another seat in the state election, with Bukit Sari going to Datuk Awang Tengah Ali Hasan. The defending incumbent garnered a majority of 5,636 votes, defeating PSB’s Alias Mail and PBK’s Riyah Basrah. Both Alias and Riyah have lost their deposits.
7.43pm: GPS’ Roland Sagah has won Tarat by 62.7% or 6,500 votes.
7.41pm: Dr Kelvin Yii suggests he has lost the Batu Kawah seat after several postings on Twitter.
"I may not have won, but I have had the opportunity to see for myself the needs of Batu Kawah and learn a lot from my interactions with the folk of Batu Kawah.
"This experience has strengthened my resolve to build up Sarawakians. I shall continue to use my platform as an MP to make life better for everyday Sarawakians," Dr Yii tweeted.

7.40pm: GPS' Jefferson Jamit Unyat officially retains Bukit Goram with a 3,558-vote majority. He beats DAP's Joseph Jinggut; PSB's Robert Segie; Parti Bumi Kenyalang's Puso Bujang; and Parti Bansa Dayak's Robert Saweng, who all lost their deposits.
7.35pm: GPS’ Abdul Yakub Arbi successfully retains Balingian, securing 4,050 votes. He defeats PSB’s Yusuf Abdul Rahman and PKR’s Abdul Jalil Bujang, who lost his deposit.
7.30pm: PSB has won its second seat in Engkilili, with Johnichal Rayong Ngipa garnering 3,246 votes.
7.27pm: GPS' Gerald Rentap Jabu officially retains the Layar seat with a 2,039-vote majority, beating PSB's Isik Utau. In 2016, Gerald won the seat after beating PKR's Vernon Aji Kedit with a 1,428-vote majority.
7.22pm: Wilson Nyabong Ijang from GPS officially retains the Pelagus seat with a 1,049-vote majority, beating PSB's Kristoffer Nyuak Bajok. Meanwhile, DAP's Solomon Kumong, Parti Bumi Kenyalang's Nyambong Sibat, and Parti Bansa Dayak's Moses Ripai all lost their deposits. Wilson previously won the seat with a higher 3,284-vote majority in 2016.
7.20pm: The seat with the biggest majority was Asajaya with 4,351 votes, while Ba'kelalan had the smallest majority with 680 votes. So far, 17 candidates have lost their deposits.
7.19pm: Snowdon Lawan from GPS officially retains the Balai Ringin seat with 4,816 votes and a 1,285-vote majority. He beats PSB's Masir Kujat, while Parti Bumi Kenyalang's Kasim Mana loses deposit after obtaining only 195 votes. In 2016, Snowdon won the same seat with a higher 2,039-vote majority.
7.11pm: EC has confirmed that PSB has won its first seat thanks to incumbent assemblyman Baru Bian having successfully won the rural Ba'kelalan constituency with only a 680-vote majority. Coming in second is GPS' Sam Laya, while PBK's Pita Asut, PKR's Martin Labo, and independent candidate Agnes Padan have lost their deposits.
7.11pm: GPS' Abd Karim Rahman Hamzah officially wins the Asajaya seat with a majority of 4,531 votes. He beats PSB's Ishak Buji. PKR's Mahmud Epah and Parti Bumi Kenyalang's Mohamad Hamdeen Shahruddin lose their deposits after obtaining only 721 and 159 votes respectively.
7.10pm: GPS has retained a number of rural seats in their quest to retain the government. According to Bernama, unofficial results indicate GPS has won Tebedu, Beting Maro, Tellian, Murum, Dalat, Kuala Rajang, and Baleh so far.
7.10pm: The Election Commission has called the Beting Maro seat for GPS’ Razaili Gapor. He has earned a fourth term, with a comfortable majority of 1,711 votes. PAS’ only election candidate, Mohammad Arifiriazul Paijo, came in second place with 2,058 votes. Sarawak PKR acting chairman Abang Zulkifli Abang Engkeh, who only garnered 765 votes, has lost his deposit. Jacky Chiew Su Chee (PBK) and Saifudin Matsah (independent) also lost their deposits.
7.05pm: Chief Minister Tan Sri Abang Johari Openg successfully retains the Gedong seat with a 3,607-vote majority. Abang Johari beats Amanah's Cikgu Kamal, Parti Bumi Kenyalang's Tomson Ango, and PSB's Mohamad Sofian Fariz Sharbini.
7pm: In Batu Kawah, GPS incumbent Datuk Dr Sim Kui Hian is set to retain his seat with a comfortable majority as DAP’s Bandar Kuching MP Dr Kelvin Yii trails behind in the vote count.
6.50pm: GPS’ Abdul Yakub Arbi has retained Balingian.
6.40pm: GPS has officially won two state seats – Sebuyau and Belaga. According to official results, Datuk Julaihi Narawi won Sebuyau with a majority of 4,134 votes, while Liwan Lagang won Belaga with a 2,245-vote majority.
