KUALA LUMPUR – Separate wings of Islamist party PAS have issued opposing views about the recent debacle involving the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) and its chief commissioner Tan Sri Azam Baki.
A statement issued by PAS secretary-general Datuk Seri Takiyuddin Hassan yesterday commended Azam for clearing the air about the alleged conflicts of interest brought against him, saying it was the right thing to do to maintain the perception and integrity of MACC.
“PAS applauds steps taken by MACC’s chief commissioner Tan Sri Azam Baki, who openly addressed the accusations by several media agencies and independent portals against him concerning alleged ownership of shares in several companies.
“The open statement by MACC’s chief commissioner that denied these accusations can hopefully put an end to the actions of certain parties who appear to be raising the issue deliberately, as though they intend to trigger doubt among the people and cause instability in the country under the leadership of Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob.”
Takiyuddin said that the burden of proof now lies with Azam’s accusers to present their evidence against the chief commissioner, adding that he hopes to see authorities taking fair and impartial action against all involved in the episode, if needed, and for it to be based on the rule of law.
This despite PAS Youth calling for independent and transparent investigations into the case, and for top MACC officials who are involved, which would include Azam, to go on leave pending the completion of the investigations.
Party youth chief Ahmad Fadhli Shaari through a statement called for Ismail Sabri as the country’s leader to initiate investigations into the case, saying the incident can threaten the credibility and perception of the government and their commitment towards combating corruption and upholding integrity.
“PAS Youth, with all due respect, suggests that those involved, including the most senior MACC officer who is implicated in the issue, be rested until the investigations have concluded and the names of those concerned are cleared,” Fadhli was quoted as saying by HarakahDaily yesterday.
He added how the Youth wing believes the matter is a serious concern, which the government must give attention to avoid further negative perceptions towards the country and its administration.
Following Azam’s statement during a press conference on Wednesday, several parties have come forward and questioned his justifications with many expressing doubts.
Legal counsels who spoke to The Vibes called his reasoning as “lame” and “untenable”, and were overall unconvinced with Azam’s declaration during Wednesday’s press conference.
In Parliament, a special motion looking to debate Azam’s issue and allegations was filed by Amanah’s Datuk Seri Salahuddin Ayub, with several other lawmakers also expressing their doubts towards the chief commissioner.
Additionally, the Securities Commission has said it would call in all parties involved in the episode to seek an explanation into what transpired. – The Vibes, January 7, 2022
