KUALA LUMPUR – Several ministers voiced their support for the Budget 2021, saying the focus on helping those affected by the Covid-19 economic downturn was very much welcomed.
Due to Covid-19 standard operating procedures, the politicians had to queue to speak to the press in Parliament after the budget was tabled by Finance Minister Datuk Seri Tengku Zafrul Abdul Aziz.
Health Minister Datuk Seri Dr Adham Baba thanked the government for maintaining its RM600 monthly allowance for Covid-19 frontliners, as well as for the budget's focus on public health and primary care.
Calling the budget “expansionary”, Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Datuk Seri Mustapa Mohamed said it would form a strong base for the upcoming 12th Malaysia Plan (RMK12) set to be tabled next year.
“The RM322 billion allocation for administration and development is a huge sum in the current context. We welcome this expansionary budget; the timing is right,” said Mustapa.
“I am thankful because the budget will form a strong base for RMK12, with some of the large infrastructure projects involving roads and rail as well as building and road maintenance being announced.
“I am also grateful that the budget now has a sustainable development agenda – something no budget has ever embraced – which recognises protecting our environment is important to ensure our nation remains sustainable.”.
International Trade and Industries (Miti) Minister Datuk Seri Mohamed Azmin Ali said he was happy to see efforts to strengthen the competitiveness of small and medium enterprises.
The minister also said that the RM1.206 billion allocation to his ministry would greatly help him attract more high-quality foreign investors for high profile sectors such as the halal sector, aerospace, and creative content among others.
“At Miti, we welcome the announcement and we are certain Budget 2021 can increase Malaysia’s competitiveness.
“We have also predicted a growth rate of 6.5% to 7.5%, but as I’ve said before, there is a caveat: it can only be achieved if we increase our economic activity as soon as possible,” said Azmin.
Works Minister Datuk Seri Fadilah Yusof echoed Mustapa, saying that the focus on infrastructure projects would not just support the public but also assist the private sector’s continuity and grant economic resilience.
Human Resource Minister Datuk Seri M Saravanan said the budget would grant more confidence and alleviate the worry of workers across the nation, while helping companies retain their employees.
“The new budget has allocated RM1.5 billion to wage subsidies. This will give workers confidence that employment opportunities will continue.”
Women, Family and Community Development Minister Datuk Seri Rina Harun welcomed the government’s strong focus on the disabled community, senior citizens, the impoverished and women.
