KUALA LUMPUR – The police are looking into a rumoured street rally planned to be held next weekend at the city centre to demand the arrest of Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) chief Tan Sri Azam Baki.
Kuala Lumpur police chief Datuk Azmi Abu Kassim said cops are currently gathering information pertaining to the matter and determining whether it is authentic, Berita Harian reported.
“I just received information pertaining to the matter. Investigation is underway.
“I can’t give any confirmation yet who is behind the dissemination of the poster and if the rally will be held.”
A poster featuring Azam’s face with the words “Tangkap Azam Baki, Rombak SPRM (Arrest Azam Baki, Reshuffle MACC)” has been shared widely on social media since last night, with the hashtag #TangkapAzamBaki also making rounds.
The graphic includes the supposed date and venue of the rally, which will be held in KL on January 22.
It has yet to be ascertained who is behind the speculated demonstration, although several youth activists have been sharing the poster, including new PKR member Adam Adli.
Calls for Azam to step down have grew louder since it was revealed that he had purchased millions of shares in public-listed companies in 2015, which he said were done by his brother under his name, which is also an offence under the law.
The Securities Commission has said it will be investigating the matter and will call Azam in for questioning soon.
Azam has also been summoned by the Agencies Select Committee under the Prime Minister’s Department to explain the controversy surrounding his shares ownership on January 19.
