GEORGE TOWN – The Astaka food court in Tg Bungah here was razed in a fire about 9am today, with images of thick smoke billowing from the popular spot quickly making the rounds online.

Five fire engines were deployed to the scene, and firemen were able to contain the blaze before it spread to an adjacent petrol station.

Residents of condominiums nearby shared on social media photos and videos of the smoke, which could be seen kilometres away, that engulfed the food court, well known among Penang folk and a regular haunt for families in the neighbourhood.

Among the food court’s celebrity patrons are members of famed local band Alleycats.
