KUALA LUMPUR – PKR member Adam Adli is under police investigation over Saturday’s #TangkapAzamBaki rally here after being questioned at the Dang Wangi district police headquarters.
Speaking to the press outside the police headquarters, Adam said authorities took an official statement and asked him about the organisation of the protest and information related to the event that was circulated online.
Adam said the investigations are being conducted under Section 504 of the Penal Code and Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act.
Section 504 of the Penal Code points to intentional insult with intent to provoke a breach of the peace.
He said such investigations are common ahead of a protest, and said the protest will continue on Saturday.
“The protest is expected to continue peacefully. It is the right of every Malaysian to air their views and assemble.”
Also present today was Adam’s lawyer Syahredzan Johan, who said today’s questioning should not scare anyone away from exercising their right to protest.
Syahredzan said Adam will continue to cooperate with police during the course of the investigations.
“These investigations should not scare anyone away from protesting, if you agree with the reason why we are going to protest.”
The #TangkapAzamBaki protest is scheduled to take place on Saturday at the Sogo shopping complex, Kuala Lumpur at 11am.
Today, the Arrest Azam Baki Action Committee shared a list of 41 NGOs and parties that will be joining the rally.
The list of civil society groups and NGOs includes the likes of Sekretariat Solidariti Rakyat, Kuala Lumpur and Selangor Chinese Assembly Hall Youth, Universiti Malaya Students’ Union, Suara Rakyat Malaysia, Coalition of Free and Fair Elections, Muslim Youth Movement Malaysia, Aliran, and Save Malaysia Stop Lynas, among others.
The political parties taking part mostly comprise the youth wings representing the opposition fold.
The group includes the PKR, DAP, and Amanah youth wings, as well as Muda, Pejuang Youth, and Parti Sosialis Malaysia Youth.
East Malaysian political parties are represented by Parti Bansa Dayak Sarawak Baru and Warisan.
Last week, social media was abuzz with the hashtag #TangkapAzamBaki (#ArrestAzamBaki), accompanied by a poster with the face of embattled Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission chief (MACC) Tan Sri Azam Baki and the words “Rombak SPRM” (Tear Down MACC) along with the date January 22, 2022.
Police have since opened a probe into the rally, with Kuala Lumpur police chief Datuk Azmi Abu Kassim saying “an investigation is underway”. – The Vibes, January 20, 2022
