GEORGE TOWN – A sudden afternoon thunderstorm caused trees to be uprooted and brought damage to public amenities and private structures in various parts of Penang today.
Despite a prolonged dry spell for most of last month, the sudden storm with lashing winds brought heavy rainfall, and caused disruption to traffic, as toppled trees blocked roads.
Some places saw rooftops and awnings broken or torn off.
State executive councillor for environment Phee Boon Poh confirmed the spate of mishaps, saying that the weather is now more severe than that of the past when there was hardly any destructive rainfall.
He said that the present phenomenon could be related to climate change.
Among the areas heavily affected were in Seberang Jaya and near the Botanical Gardens.
The route used by jeeps to the summit of Penang Hill was cut off when a tree fell onto the trail.
Hikers also lamented that they were discouraged from hiking on the trails by forest rangers due to the possibility of more debris falling and landslips.
As of 7pm, the local rescue authorities have yet to report any casualties, but they urged the people to stay indoors.
