KOTA KINABALU – Over 12% of new Covid-19 cases registered in Sabah yesterday involved children aged 11 and below, said state Covid-19 spokesman Datuk Seri Masidi Manjun.
He said out of 3,735 new positive cases registered in the state yesterday, a total of 464 cases are children under the age of 11 who have yet to be vaccinated, and 216 cases involve children under the age of five who are not eligible to receive the vaccination.
In his statement yesterday, Masidi said that despite seeing a slight decrease in new cases, it is possible that Sabah will see another spike in new cases given that the sporadic cases – those with unknown sources of infection – are still high at 66.45%.
“The high percentage of sporadic cases means a high infectivity rate among the community, involving a wider locality,” he said.
Meanwhile, the state also registered nine Covid-19 related deaths yesterday, including in Tuaran (2), Papar (2), Tawau (2), and one each in Sandakan, Keningau and Kota Belud.
However, Masidi said that the figure does not necessarily mean that the deaths occurred within the past 24 hours, as there are death cases that needed time for verification and then were reported later than the actual date.
There are a total of 2,029 Covid-19 patients currently receiving treatment at healthcare facilities in the state, with 1,176 of them at hospitals, 783 in low-risk quarantine and treatment centres, 69 in temporary detention centres or prison, and one in a private facility.
A total of 72 patients are currently under critical care, while 88 patients (27%) of the patients in Stage 4 and Stage 5 have not completed vaccination.
Kota Kinabalu district remains the highest contributor to yesterday’s cases with 1,039 cases, followed by Putatan (386), Penampang (287), Tuaran (286), Papar (261), Beaufort (214), Tawau (158), Sandakan (156), Keningau (151), and Kota Belud (138), while the rest of the districts registered two-digit new cases.
Despite Kota Kinabalu’s high number of cases, Masidi said that the district actually only registered 19 new cases yesterday as the rest are backlog cases.
He said out of 1,039 cases, 296 are backlog cases from between two to three days, 724 cases are from more than four days ago, while 89 cases are from over 12 days ago.
As of yesterday, a total of 38,647 or 9.39% of children aged five to 11 have received their first dose of vaccination. – The Vibes, February 27, 2022
