MIRI – A new field hospital is being set up in Miri to handle the surge in Omicron infections in northern Sarawak.
The field hospital will be able to accommodate 100 patients at any given time.
It will cater to patients from the northern Sarawak districts of Miri, Marudi, Niah, Baram, Limbang and Lawas.
The State Public Communications Unit today said the Miri Disaster Management Committee is overseeing the setting up of the new field hospital.
“The field hospital is being built next to the Miri Hospital. It can cater to at least 100 patients at any day of the week.
“It will take in patients from all over northern Sarawak as it is the referral hospital for patients from Miri, Lawas, Limbang, Marudi, Baram and surrounding districts,” said the unit in its latest update.
Miri is seeing a triple digit surge of Omicron, along with Kuching, Sibu and Bintulu.
In Sibu, central Sarawak, a new field hospital has already been built next to the Sibu Hospital in anticipation of a surge in Omicron infections.
The military-style hospital will also be able to accomodate 100 patients at any one time.
“The field hospital building is completed and it will soon have 100 beds inside.
“The building is made up of a better material compared to the canvas used to build the field hospitals in Kuching and Miri.
“The building costs RM1.5 million.
“It is ready to meet the anticipated surge in Omicron cases in Sibu,” said state Disaster Management Committee (SDMC) adviser Datuk Dr Sim Kui Hian recently.
Over the past weeks, the official figure of Covid-19 cases in Sibu and the rest of Sarawak, as announced by SDMC, showed a surge.
Dr Sim cautioned the people in Sibu and statewide to be on the alert for the spike in Omicron infection. – The Vibes, March 4, 2022
