MIRI – The Sarawak Forestry Corporation (SFC) has rescued a rare Borneon gibbon that has been kept captive in a cage for five years in a house in Bintulu district in northern Sarawak.
The SFC wildlife officers rescued the animal from the house yesterday.
“A resident in Bintulu had surrendered the gibbon to the SFC unit in Bintulu.
“The SFC unit went to the house and rescued the gibbon and took it to the Taman Tumbina Nature Park.
“The resident said he had been keeping the gibbon since it was a baby.
“He said he found the gibbon injured somewhere near his place and decided to keep it as his pet.
“He realised it is illegal to keep the wildlife after seeing posters distributed by SFC officers on offences against wildlife,” the SFC said in a press statement.
The SFC called on those keeping wildlife to surrender them immediately.
Members of the public who have information on illegal wildlife activities are encouraged to report through SFC hotlines – Kuching (019-8859996), Sibu (019-8883561), Bintulu (019-8332737), Miri (019-8290994). – The Vibes, March 18, 2022
