KOTA KINABALU – Numerous part-time election workers hired for Sabah’s state election in September have yet to be paid by the Election Commission (EC), according to documents sighted by The Vibes.
And, the workers now are finding it tough to make ends meet due to the Covid-19 outbreak in the state.
An election worker speaking on condition of anonymity said part-timers were hired to assist in the election in various roles and paid in daily allowances.
Locals were hired as managers, officers, enforcement officers, assistants, voting hall supervisors, clerks, location guides and others.
“For instance, a manager would be paid around RM1,200, clerks get between RM200 and RM400 depending on job scope,” said the source who is based in Tuaran.
Meanwhile, the state EC office confirmed to The Vibes that there are part-timers who have not been paid since the election ended.
“The payments are still being processed. Some have already received their payment. This all depends on the claims submitted to our office by the managing officers.
“Some of the managers are late filing claims,” an officer said.
The officer however did not disclose how many election workers have
not been paid.
A total of 30,540 people were hired as election workers to man 741 voting centres statewide during the state election. – The Vibes, November 13, 2020
