LANGKAWI – Expatriates and their Malaysian friends here have raised RM31,320 in a recent fundraiser to aid Ukrainians displaced by the ongoing invasion of their country by Russia.

Hosted by the Yellow Cafe in Pantai Chenang, the one-night event was part of the “Heart to Ukraine” initiative launched by the venue owners.

Rotary International Club of Langkawi president David Bradley, who helped organise the fundraiser, said the funds will be sent to Disaster Aid Europe, a humanitarian aid vehicle for Ukrainian refugees.

Yevheniya Shynkarenko, the media relations liaison officer for Ukraine’s embassy to Malaysia, said they are grateful for the assistance from Malaysians, including several doctors who have volunteered to treat refugees in Poland.

She said those keen to contribute funds to aid Ukrainian refugees can either go through the Ukrainian Cultural Association here or the various international funds and initiatives launched in the wake of the invasion.

“We know that during Ramadan, people are willing to contribute. Donations made during this holy month are noble,” Shynkarenko said. - The Vibes, April 30, 2022
