GEORGE TOWN – As out-of-state Malaysians and tourists pour into Penang, state tourism exco Yeoh Soon Hin has shared three no-nos he hopes visitors can adhere to.

One is to not park haphazardly in the town area to prevent congestion along the narrow roads here.

Yeoh said tourists need to strictly observe traffic regulations because the roads here are narrow, especially in high-density areas such as the heritage enclave.

Police anticipate more than one million vehicles entering the state from today until Thursday with hotels reporting high occupancy rates.

“It is best to either park at the designated areas or use public transport to get around the state,” he said in a statement.

He also advised visitors to put on their masks when in crowded areas and practice good personal hygiene such as regular hand sanitising.

According to state health exco Dr Norlela Ariffin, Penang recorded 146 Covid-19 cases yesterday with a cumulative total of 277,355 while the death toll remains at 1,984, and regular self-testing is advised.

Yeoh also warned traders and tourism industry players against profiteering, saying they should not exploit the short-term increase of visitors.

He added that checks at major roads here showed that the state is more congested as usual as tourists are coming in droves. – The Vibes, May 1, 2022
