KUALA LUMPUR – Former politician turned businessman Datuk Douglas K.K. Lee passed away earlier today. He was 98 years old.
Douglas, who is the eldest son to Malaya’s former transport and finance minister Tun H.S. Lee, was admitted to the intensive care unit last Saturday.
This was confirmed by Douglas’ daughter Janet Lee on her Facebook page.
“Dad has left us this morning to join mommy in heaven. Very grateful that his passing was peaceful, with us beside him. Rest in peace, dad. You were the best,” she posted.
His cause of death has not been made public.
The wake was held today, from 7pm to 10pm, and will be held tomorrow, from 12pm to 10pm at Nirvana 2 Kuala Lumpur in Jalan Dewan Bahasa, Bukit Seputeh.
A funeral service will be held at 10am on Wednesday at St Mary’s Cathedral, Jalan Raja here.
His remains will be cremated at noon on the same day at Nirvana Shah Alam.
Douglas Lee Kim Kiu (“Cambridge” in Chinese) was born on December 4, 1923 and was the former director of The International Association of Lions Clubs.
He was MCA’s youngest candidate in the first Malayan local election in 1952, winning the Imbi ward with two others. He was later an assemblyman for the Salak state seat and MCA Youth secretary-general.
His wife Datin Ruby Ong died in 2009. They were married on July 4, 1947.
One of their children, Kenneth Lee Fook Mun @ Omar Iskandar Lee Abdullah was involved in the fatal shooting of accountant Linda Lee Good Yew in August 2000.
It was reported that the murder charge was amended to involuntary manslaughter and in July 2003, Kenneth was sentenced to eight years’ jail by the high court after it ruled that murder charges against the accused would not stand.
Subsequently, in March 2005, following an appeal by the prosecution against the sentence, Kenneth was sentenced to death by the appellate court and the following year, the Federal Court upheld the death penalty.
Kenneth was granted clemency in January 2008 by the then Yang di-Pertuan Agong. – The Vibes, May 2, 2022
