KUALA LUMPUR – If opposition leader Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim was still finance minister, Malaysia would have zero national debt and likely the richest country in Southeast Asia, fellow party member Karuppaiya Muthusamy (Padang Serai-Pakatan Harapan).
In Dewan Rakyat today, Karuppaiya also said: “It is not too late, if Port Dickson (Anwar) becomes the ninth Prime Minister, the country’s fiscal woes will be solved.”
This came after Deputy Finance Minister I Datuk Abdul Rahim Bakri disclosed the country’s debt-to-GDP ratio at 6.7%.
Rahim said it is normal for any country to have debts, adding that some even had a higher debt-to-GDP ratio than Malaysia and still doing well.
“Singapore’s (debt-to-GDP) stands at 155.3%. We are not doing that bad. What is important is that whatever borrowings the country does is done to finance the country’s development which can propel us to become a modern country,” he added. – The Vibes, November 16, 2020
