KUALA LUMPUR – All existing national secondary schools (SMK) and school hostels in the Lawas parliamentary constituency, Sarawak still have adequate capacity, the Dewan Rakyat was told today.

Deputy Education Minister I Muslimin Yahaya said to date, the capacity of existing schools in the area is between 68 and 85%, while the capacity of hostels is between 68.5 and 92%.

“The Ministry of Education (MOE) has provided four SMK for Lawas residents, namely SMK Lawas, SMK Merapok, SMK Trusan and SMK Sundar. Of that number, three schools have hostels.

“All these SMK are one-session schools and still operating under their actual capacity," he said when replying to a question from Baru Bian (PSB-Selangau) on the latest status of the proposed construction of SMK Long Semado.

In this regard, Muslimin said so far, there was no need to build a new SMK in the Lawas parliamentary constituency, including the construction of SMK Long Semado.

He said the decision was made based on the student enrollment data analysis from 2017 to 2019 by the MOE through the Sarawak State Education Department (JPN).

"If there is a need to build a new school in the future, the MOE will take appropriate measures for that purpose," he said. – Bernama, November 19, 2020
