[UPDATED] PSD hits back, says allegations against its DG unfounded, ill-intended

KUALA LUMPUR – The Public Services Department (PSD) has called out the immigration authorities over the various statements issued by its union and related association via social media accusing its director-general (DG) Datuk Seri Mohd Shafiq Abdullah of allegedly admonishing an immigration officer at an airport counter, yesterday morning.

Calling for the Immigration Department to fully investigate the incident, the PSD also expressed its regret for the “false statements” issued across social media platforms by irresponsible parties.

In a statement today, PSD stated that it views the matter seriously and stressed that all allegations against its DG are baseless, ill-intended, and malicious with a view to damage his image as a high-ranking government official.

For the record, the DG had pointed out to the immigration personnel at KLIA, specifically at James Lee, over the non-compliance of the standard operating procedure whereby the officer failed to check his travel documents and passport as well as those travelling with his delegation.

“In fact, the entire delegation was ordered to head straight for the customs clearance area to continue their journey.”

PSD is of the view that non-compliance with regard to inspection of immigration documents such as passports is a serious offence under legal means. 

“The officer who failed to comply with immigration rules can be cited for disciplinary action,” the department stated.

PSD also stressed that the officer was never reprimanded in public as alleged.

“The DG had only advised the said officer to comply with the rules and help resolve issues related to it prudently.

“He also recommended for the Immigration Department in KLIA to increase its compliance of SOPs to ensure there are no instances of non-compliance by them.”

PSD’s response comes after the Immigration Services Union of Peninsular Malaysia demanded an open apology from Shafiq over the latter’s alleged outburst against an immigration officer at an airport counter yesterday morning.

Union president Khairil Niza Khairuddin had said the union was “baffled” by the incident, which has tainted the reputation of the country’s public service.

He said the DG, as a top leader, should not act beyond his capacity, which includes uttering harsh words against an officer on duty. – The Vibes, August 4, 2022
