KUALA LUMPUR – The Malaysian Medical Association (MMA) wants the government to crack down hard on the parties that ruin the image of the beauty industry.

Stressing on unregistered self-claim beauticians flooding the nation, its president, Dr Koh Kar Chai, welcomes the government's decision to engage with stakeholders and look into stricter regulation of the beauty and aesthetics industry.

“The authorities should come down strongly on these (unqualified) practitioners and trainers,” he said in a statement today.

Dr Koh said youth resort to such activities following the high cost offered, which can run into thousands of ringgit – charges that are out of their budget.

He also said they couldn't belittle the beauticians’ services and that many of them made their clients feel good about themselves after giving them a makeover.

“However, there is a need for professional assessment before deciding on the treatment to achieve the desired outcome even though they have trained hard to be certified professionals,” he stressed.

Dr Koh added that there is a line drawn to define what a beautician is allowed to do and in a broad sense, everyone knows that surgical procedures are prohibited.

“Even doctors who do plastic surgery need to undergo specialist post-graduate training in order to be a registered plastic surgeon,”

“Dental doctors also need to undergo training for years before being allowed to provide dental treatment, including the orthodontic treatment”. he added.

He said MMA is pleased that the government is now taking steps to regulate the industry properly and is looking into the guidelines that outline the types of services allowed in a beauty establishment.

Previously,  the Health Ministry announced that enforcement actions would be taken against illegal dental practitioners under the Dental Act 2018 (Act 804).

The ministry also viewed each complaint received by the ministry’s Dental Health Programme seriously, adding that the complaints will be investigated before enforcement measures, including raids, are taken through the provisions under Part VI of the act. – The Vibes, August 12, 2022.
