KUALA LUMPUR – Taman Sri Muda in Shah Alam has flooded again, following continuous heavy rain for a few hours this afternoon.

Water receded by 7.21pm, according to the Selangor Fire and Rescue Department.

Earlier, department director Norazam Khamis said the floodwaters began rising at 5.15pm today and were about one foot deep (around 0.3m).

“At the same time, two boats are being sent to the location along with six members,” he said in the department’s media WhatsApp group.

At about 7pm this evening, Selangor Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari said sluice gates had been opened to help water in flooded areas recede.

“I have received reports of flash floods around Sri Muda. Sluice gates have been opened,” he tweeted, adding that the Selangor government was monitoring the situation at several rivers.

In a Twitter video sighted by The Vibes earlier, roads behind Mydin Mart Sri Muda appeared to be inundated following the heavy downpour, with car tyres partially submerged in the floodwaters.

This afternoon’s rain has also caused two rivers in Selangor to reach warning and dangerous levels.

According to the Irrigation and Drainage Department’s (Public Info Banjir website, Sg Raya in Batu 9 is at a dangerous level of 39.94m, while Sg Balak in Kg Baru Balakong is at a warning level of 37.77m.

Both rivers are in the Hulu Langat district.

Heavy rain still persists in Selangor and Klang, as of 5pm this afternoon, with Taman Sri Muda recording a rainfall reading of 56mm in an hour, according to a tweet by the department’s forecast testing dissemination unit.

A subsequent update from the Selangor fire department said the water level at Taman Sri Muda Seksyen 25 had risen to under two and a half feet, but had not yet entered homes.

No individuals have been evacuated either. – The Vibes, August 20, 2022
