KUALA LUMPUR – Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob arrived at the Umno headquarters around 8pm to attend the Umno Supreme Council meeting.

Umno secretary-general Datuk Seri Ahmad Maslan tweeted that the meeting started at 8.30pm and was chaired by party president Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi.

Also present was deputy president Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan.

Ismail Sabri, who is also the Umno vice-president, did not attend the Umno president’s special briefing session this afternoon as he was attending a programme in Pahang.

However, a vehicle parked in the basement of the PWTC building, believed to be a mine-resistant ambush protected (MRAP) vehicle, attracted the attention of passers-by.

While the prime minister is always accorded a full security detail, the presence of the MRAP certainly triggered curiosity.

“Is this really necessary?” asked an Umno member who wished to remain anonymous.

During the briefing, the mere mention of Ismail Sabri’s name had drawn jeers and boos by the 3,000-strong crowd at gathered at the Merdeka Hall in the World Trade Centre.

The party members’ discontent with Ismail Sabri was palpable, as he is largely seen as incapable of defending the party’s interests, with some even questioning why he was not in attendance to show his support.

During his speech to the hall, Zahid assured party members that he will continue to push the party’s demand for an early election.

Zahid also said that an early election was necessary as the current government led by Ismail Sabri was “hybrid” and thefore unstable. – The Vibes, August 27, 2022
