Covid-19: S’wak confirms two XBB cases, warns of potential outbreak

MIRI – Sarawak has uncovered two people infected with the highly contagious XBB Omicron Covid-19 strain.

The State Disaster Management Committee today announced the worrying findings, and warned Sarawakians of the possibility of more such cases among the community.

Committee chairman Datuk Douglas Uggah said the two cases were detected by Unimas (Universiti Malaysia Sarawak) Institute of Health and Community Medicine.

The institute’s head Dr David Perera had today forwarded the findings to the committee, said Uggah in a press statement in Kuching.

The two cases involve a tourist holding a USA passport and a local returning from umrah pilgrimage, he said.

“These two cases were detected by Unimas through samplings carried out last month.

“There is a possibility the XBB was already in Sarawak early last month,” he said, adding that the two patients are being treated in medical centres now.

Uggah said there could be more such cases in the community and urged the public to take extra precautions. – The Vibes, November 3, 2022
