KUALA LUMPUR – Four districts in Selangor, Kelantan, and Johor are still affected by floods as of noon today, involving 731 victims from 175 households still being sheltered in eight temporary relief centres.
The National Disaster Management Agency (Nadma) Central Disaster Management Committee secretariat said in a statement today that according to the Selangor State Flood Management Committee’s monitoring, the flash flood in Kg Budiman in Petaling district has completely receded.
Nadma said the flood was due to very heavy rainfall within a short time involving a lot of rainwater flowing to the village areas from upstream.
“As the drainage system and existing reservoirs could not handle the rainwater, it flowed into the residential areas. A total of 50 homes are estimated to be affected in this incident and the victims were relocated to the Al-Falah Mosque centre,” said the statement.
Nadma also said the Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia) yesterday issued a continuous rain warning, also warning of more floods if significant rain continues to occur in the basins of Sg Besut and Sg Setiu in Terengganu, Sg Golok in Kelantan, and Sg Endau in Johor and Pahang.
Nadma said the Kelantan secretariat reported that water levels in some areas of the state have started to rise, but the situation is under control and all affected residents are on standby and will evacuate if instructed by the authorities.
At the same time, Nadma said caretaker prime minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob chaired the Special Coordination Meeting of the Disaster Operations Control Centre virtually at 11.45pm last night.
The agency said the meeting discussed current developments since the start of the northeast monsoon on November 7 in the states involved.
“Preliminary preparations on the part of the central committee and the District Flood Management Committees in terms of asset support, human resources, and relief centre facilities have been launched with assistance to affected victims mobilised,” said the statement.
Nadma has also alerted residents, especially in areas that expect flooding, adding that they can obtain the latest information and warnings through the website publicinfobanjir.water.gov.my, the PubliclnfoBanjir Facebook page, and @JPS_InfoBanjir on Twitter.
