KUALA LUMPUR – The political crisis earlier this year has turned Umno and Bersatu from enemies into allies, said Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin.
Although there were those uncomfortable with the situation and viewed it as Umno being forced to enter into a partnership, said the Bersatu president, the situation should be seen as a test for Malay-Muslim leaders, including those from PAS, to strengthen their ties.
“In front of us lie vast opportunities for us to unite the Malay-Muslim community, which has experienced political divisions over the years.
“Realise that the political crisis at the beginning of this year has brought together the leadership of Bersatu, Umno and PAS into the same alignment.
“To me, this strengthening of ties is a preliminary step towards creating greater unity among Muslims,” he said in his policy speech at the party’s general assembly, held virtually, today.
Malays will forever be divided and Muslim unity become mere rhetoric if leaders prioritise only their respective parties’ interests, he said.
“Malay unity will remain an elusive dream. It will never materialise in our lifetime. What is wrong if we seize the opportunity presented by Allah through this test to strengthen the unity among us?”
He said it would be good if all Malay-Muslim leaders in the country unite “in a great congregation” to ensure stability.
The prime minister said he and Umno president Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi realised, at a meeting between them, that the relationship between their parties should be improved, even if it is no easy task.
Steps to strengthen ties between the parties, as well as PAS, will be taken to ensure no clashes occur between them in the 15th general election, he said.
Muhyiddin said Bersatu will continue to take a moderate approach when it comes to upholding Islam as the nation’s official religion.
He gave a guarantee of justice and equality for all citizens, and that prosperity will be enjoyed fairly and equitably. – Bernama, November 28, 2020
