KUALA LUMPUR – Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim performed his first Friday prayers today as the prime minister at Masjid Putra here today.
Clad in a pink baju Melayu and songkok, he arrived at the mosque at about 1.01pm and was greeted by several members of the mosque committee and others.
It was Anwar’s first appearance as the 10th prime minister after being sworn in yesterday afternoon.
The sermon reading and Friday prayers were led by the grand imam of Masjid Putra, Ustaz Salahuddin Ghozali.
The sermon was about the responsibilities that must be borne by an elected leader.
As soon as he finished performing Friday prayers, he shook hands and spent time socialising with about 3,000 worshipers, most of whom were government employees and civilians.
A group of people also began chanting “reformasi” when Anwar left the mosque.
When asked about his first day as prime minister, Anwar said that everything was going well and that he was busy.
“Good, good, and busy. Keep exploring what is necessary,” he said with a smile.
Anwar, 75, was sworn in as the 10th prime minister in front of Yang di-Pertuan Agong Al-Sultan Abdullah Ri’ayatuddin Al-Mustafa Billah Shah, at Istana Negara yesterday afternoon.
Al-Sultan Abdullah approved the appointment of Anwar as the prime minister in accordance with Article 40(2)(a) and Article 43(2)(a) of the federal constitution.
