KUALA LUMPUR – Police have been instructed by newly minted prime minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim to investigate those who went overboard in hurling baseless accusations and issuing slanderous statements that threaten the country’s harmony.
PKR information chief Fahmi Fadzil said this was relayed to Pakatan Harapan (PH) leaders by Anwar himself during the PH presidential council meeting today.
“We draw the line when there are elements of slander, such as accusations of being an Israeli agent. He (Anwar) has asked police to take action.
“As such, I once again request for all Malaysians to respect the Yang di-Pertuan Agong’s decree for everyone to be united, for the sake of our beloved Malaysia.
“At the same time, the series of slanderous and racial statements that are excessive must stop now.
“Now is a time for us (PH) to start serving. Whatever it is, we hope no one else intends to break the law.”
While Fahmi did not elaborate on who he was referring to, this came to light after various accusations were hurled by certain quarters against Anwar and PH that threaten to incite racial and religious tensions.
Among others, Perikatan Nasional chairman Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin had during the election campaigning urged the public against voting for PH, labelling the coalition as a “big danger”.
He suggested that Christians are supposedly working in cahoots with a group of Jews to promote and Christianise Malaysia, and that PH will sponsor them in the event of victory.
Muhyiddin later issued a statement saying his comments were taken out of context, with a video of his speech being selectively edited to create a false narrative against him.
Earlier today, PAS president Tan Sri Abdul Hadi Awang also accused DAP of spreading Islamophobic narratives, labelling the party as “creedless and immoral” and accusing it of “showing its true colours” for the sake of its own political expediency.
On social media platform TikTok, supporters identified to be from a certain party have also previously spread hate propaganda, including disinformation and threats related to the May 13, 1969 racial riots. – The Vibes, November 28, 2022
