SHAH ALAM – The Selangor government plans to allow the wearing of batik in the state assembly following a similar implementation at the Parliament, says Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari.
He said the move was one of the efforts to promote Batik Selangor which features the “bunga tanjung” (Spanish cherry) motif in its designs.
“However, the state assembly has yet to change its rules (on dress code). When we amend the dress code to allow the wearing of batik, then we can wear it,” he told reporters after the Batik Selangor launching ceremony for civil servants here today.
Amirudin said the wearing of batik would also be introduced to the local community through village heads in the future.
The Sg Tua assemblyman believed that the bunga tanjung motif is comprehensive and neutral – not linked to any political entity – which is suitable to be worn by all parties.
Meanwhile, State Rural Development and Culture Committee chairman Borhan Aman Shah said the bunga tanjung motif was chosen based on research carried out by the Selangor Malay Customs and Heritage Corporation. – Bernama, December 1, 2022
