Remand extended for Thai trio held over border shoot-out

KANGAR – Police today obtained a court order to extend the seven-day remand of three Thai men over a shoot-out between General Operations Force (GOF) members and smugglers at the Malaysia-Thailand border last month.

Padang Besar district police chief Saifudin Aslin Abbas said the initial remand order against the trio, aged 34 to 38, expired today.

On November 24, GOF officer Sgt Baharuddin Ramli, 54, was killed, while his colleague, Sgt Norihan Tari, 39, was seriously injured in an exchange of gunfire near a border checkpoint in Padang Besar.

“No new arrests have been made. Investigations will continue. The remand period for 15 other local suspects will end tomorrow,” Saifudin told Bernama.

The case is being investigated under Sections 302 and 307 of the Penal Code for murder and attempted murder. – Bernama, December 1, 2020
