KUALA LUMPUR – An illness as a result of a recent operation did not deter Mohd Sany Hamzan (Hulu Langat-PH) from attending the first sitting of the 15th Parliament session today to take his oath of office.

Acknowledging the situation, Dewan Rakyat Speaker Datuk Johari Abdul allowed the Amanah lawmaker to take his oath from his seat, as opposed to the other MPs who took theirs from a rostrum.

“I have received a notice from Hulu Langat on his health condition, having undergone an operation last week and not being allowed to walk,” Johari said today.

“As such, I allow him to take his oath from his seat.”

Sany, dressed in a black baju Melayu with a matching songkok and multi-coloured sampin, proceeded to take his oath before the ceremony proceeded with the other lawmakers.

The Amanah mobilisation director later confirmed when contacted that he underwent a minor operation, resulting in pain in his legs, but stopped short of revealing details.

The procedure took place on December 13 at Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia Medical Centre.

Sany is one of the 222 newly elected MPs to take their oaths of office as Dewan Rakyat members today.

Earlier, the Dewan Rakyat had voted in Johari as the new speaker, with 147 votes over opposition choice Tan Sri Mohd Radzi Sheikh Ahmad’s 74.
