KUALA LUMPUR – Local media agencies need to help preserve national harmony by fighting the spread of fake news and hate speech, said Deputy Communications and Digital Minister Teo Nie Ching.
The Kulai MP said that agencies should only disseminate verified and accurate information as many people are now relying on social media for news.
“The era of fake news is fast becoming a threat to democracy not only in Malaysia but also in other countries, so the media agencies should play their role to curb hate speeches, misinformation and disinformation.
“...at the same time, we are not limiting freedom of speech. I think we should achieve a balance while ensuring community harmony is protected,” she said.
She was speaking after a briefing and working visit to Bernama here today.
Also present were the ministry’s deputy secretary-general (strategic communications and creative industry) Mastura Ahmad Mustafa, Bernama chairman Senator Datuk Ras Adiba Radzi and chief executive officer Roslan Ariffin.
Also present were the agency’s deputy editor-in-chief (international news) Jamaluddin Muhammad, who is also the acting editor-in-chief, and executive editor and acting deputy editor-in-chief (news) Harlina Samson.
Commenting on her visit to Bernama, she hopes the national news agency would be a source of choice for readers abroad who wish to keep abreast with the country’s latest developments.
“I have also been given a briefing to help me understand Bernama’s functions and the challenges it faces.
“Under the minister’s leadership, I hope, together with all the ministry’s and Bernama’s staff, to assist the agency in providing comprehensive service and ensure that information is delivered to all Malaysians,” she said. – Bernama, December 22, 2022
