MIRI – Rescuers have recovered the body of an 18-month-old boy who drowned after he fell in a water canal in Sibu here this afternoon.

The Sarawak Fire and Rescue Department said teams from the Sg Merah fire station had found the remains of Sia Chin Hang at about 3.00pm today, following the 1.30pm incident.

In a statement, the department said the toddler was found about 600m from his home.

“Medical teams declared the victim dead after our units found his body in the canal,” he said.

“The body was then handed over to police. Police have taken over the probe.”

Earlier, the department said the Sg Merah station received an emergency call from the victim’s family members at 1.24pm.

It said 10 personnel were deployed to the site of the incident, which was located along Jalan Kwong Ming near the Sibu township.

It is understood that an investigation is underway to determine the cause of the incident, which took place in a residential area. – The Vibes, December 27, 2022
