Melaka govt to give monthly pension payments to parents of Batang Kali victim

KUALA LUMPUR – Parents of Lai Chee Sam – who died in the Batang Kali landslide – will receive pension payments of RM847.60 monthly from January onwards.

This was announced by Melaka’s Unity, Information, Human Resources and Consumer Affairs committee chairman Ngwe Hee Sem.

Chee Sam’s father Lai Hua Keong, 54 and mother Chia Eet Loun, 51, were also given a RM2,000 contribution to help pay for funeral expenses, Ngwe was quoted as saying by Bernama after attending a programme hosted by Social Security Organisation in Kg Permai, Alor Gajah in Melaka.

Also present was Melaka Perkeso director Abd Razak Omar.

Chee Sam, 33, perished along with his wife, Lai See Tin, 33, their son Jonas Lai Ze Kai, 2, and their daughter Giselle Lai Yu Xi, 6. The family resided in Machap Baru New Village, Melaka.

Chee Sam’s body was found at the site of the landslide on December 18, while the remains of his wife and son were found the day after. The body of daughter Giselle was recovered on December 20.

All four were laid to rest at the Eternal Memorial Park in Jasin, Melaka on December 27.
