PUTRAJAYA – Malaysia today recorded 1,600 fresh Covid-19 cases, with Negri Sembilan overtaking Selangor as the state with the most new infections.
Health Director-General Tan Sri Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah, in a statement, said Negri Sembilan has a third of the new infections at 541, followed by Selangor (426) and Sabah (248).
“The spike there was caused by an increase in infections in the Bakti cluster, with 500 cases. These are isolated cases inside prison.”
He said the ministry has identified two new clusters, namely Malawati in Kuala Selangor, and the Awan Lembah construction site in Lembah Pantai and Titiwangsa, Kuala Lumpur, which have 14 and 35 cases to date, respectively.
Kuala Lumpur registered 148 fresh cases, Johor (98), Penang (55), Perak (54), Kedah (18), Labuan (5), Kelantan (3), Sarawak (2), Pahang (1) and Melaka (1).
Today’s cases take the national tally to 74,294.
Dr Noor Hisham said another 1,033 patients have been discharged, bringing total recoveries to 62,306.
The latest figures mean there are now 11,604 active coronavirus cases in the country.
There are two new fatalities, pushing up the death toll to 348, or 0.52% of total infections.
Other than the Bakti cluster, said Dr Noor Hisham, 84 of the new cases are linked to clusters related to prisons and detention centres.
They are Tembok (49), the Sibuga temporary detention facility (17), Seberang Prai Prison (8), Matambai (7), Jalan Harapan Prison (2) and GK Tawau (1).
“Currently, 129 patients are in intensive care, with 57 on ventilators,” said Dr Noor Hisham. – The Vibes, December 7, 2020
