GEORGE TOWN – The Penang Island City Council (MBPP) has launched a logo design competition to mark the 50th anniversary of the sister city status between George Town and Adelaide, Australia.

The island’s lord mayor and MBPP president, Datuk Yew Tung Seang, urged the state’s top designers to compete and create the best logo design that will represent a series of related events to be rolled out in the coming months.

The winners stand to win return air tickets and cash rewards, while their winning creation would be used for all official events linked to the anniversary celebrations, which are expected to kick off by the second quarter of this year.

The sister city status is unique to both cities due to their shared history known as the “Light” connection.

In 1786, Penang was founded by a British naval specialist Francis Light and 50 years later, his eldest son, Col William Light, went on to be part of a team that founded Adelaide, the state capital of South Australia.

In 1973, then chief minister of Penang, the late Tun Dr Lim Chong Eu, had sanctioned the sister city status with Adelaide, adding to a list of similar relationships with Medan, Indonesia, and Xiamen in China.

Working alongside the Adelaide City Council, the MBPP plans to host an education exchange between Adelaide and private higher learning institutions in Penang, a food and beverage festival, an Aussie culinary art festival, an orchestra and culture show, as well as tree planting, among others.

In conjunction with the 50th anniversary, state executive councillor Yeoh Soon Hin also plans to spearhead efforts to solidify ties in tourism, education, trade, and investment with Adelaide, as the two cities look to recover from the global lockdown brought by the Covid-19 pandemic.

The details for the competition are available on the MBPP’s social media channels and entries can be emailed to [email protected]
