KANGAR – Fifty-two suspects in the shooting of General Operations Force (GOF) members will be remanded under Security Offences (Special Measures) Act 2012 (Sosma) for further investigation.

State police chief Datuk Surina Saad said the remands of 23 suspects had ended today, however, 22 of them will be remanded again under Sosma.

“One suspect, who has been released, will be a prosecution witness,” she told reporters here today.

She said 30 more suspects, whose remand will end tomorrow, will also be remanded under Sosma.

On November 24, GOF member Sgt Baharuddin Ramli, 54, was killed while his friend, Sgt Norihan Tari, 39, was seriously injured in a shootout with a group of smugglers, about 600m from the TS9 checkpoint in Padang Besar.

Surina said all 52 suspects, aged between 20 and 65 years old, will be charged under Section 130V of the Penal Code for committing an organised crime.

She said police are waiting for a response from the Thai government to bring in three more Thai suspects detained there.

“We hope the suspects will be allowed to enter as they are main suspects in this case.”

Surina said more arrests will be made to ensure that all suspects will be brought to justice. – Bernama, December 8, 2020
