KUALA LUMPUR – The passing of Budget 2021 on November 26 is a sign of majority support for Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin among MPs, Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Parliament and Law) Datuk Takiyuddin Hassan said today.
"On February 24, the then prime minister and Langkawi MP Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad resigned from his position as prime minister. Subsequently, on March 1, the MP for Pagoh (Muhyiddin) was appointed prime minister after securing 114 seats," he told the Dewan Rakyat.
He said that if the budget had failed to pass, it would have signalled a lack of support for Muhyiddin as prime minister.
Takiyuddin, who is also Kota Baru MP and PAS’ chief whip in the House, was responding to a question by Hassan Abdul Karim (PH-Pasir Gudang) on the motions for votes of confidence and no-confidence for the prime minister, which have been sought by various MPs.
He also addressed arguments from the opposition aisle, pointing out that the passing of the Supply Bill 2021 on November 26, to be deliberated next at the committee stage, was done with majority support.
He added that the government is open to the idea of someone else having enough support to become prime minister.
"If there is a MP who shores up numbers through statutory declarations to the Agong that he has more than 112 MPs supporting him, the government is open to the idea," he said.
"But we are subject to the rules of Parliament, which state that government matters must be discussed first before other matters," said Takiyuddin. – The Vibes, December 10, 2020
