PUTRAJAYA – The National Water Services Commission (SPAN) has set up a “war room” to supervise and ensure sustainable water supply in the peninsula and Labuan during the coming El Nino.

The phenomenon is predicted to last till September but experts have warned that it could stretch to October.

In a statement today, SPAN said the objective of setting up the war room, among others, is to closely monitor the dams and rivers that supply raw water to 354 treatment plants.

It is also to oversee the continuous supply of clean water and ensure suppliers take mitigation steps in the event of a supply crisis, the statement said.

SPAN also advised users to be prudent in their water usage during the current hot and dry spell.

They are also advised to contact water suppliers in their respective states if they have any questions or feedback about water services during the El Nino by 019-779-5000 (phone or WhatsApp), email [email protected], or visit the website https://warroom.span.gov.my.

Several international meteorological agencies have predicted the formation of an El Nino in mid-2023 to early 2024 and many countries have taken precautions to prevent the phenomenon’s adverse effects.
